Hello to all members and supporters of the Cornucopia Committee. As Patron, I am writing to update you on a wonderfully busy first half of the year and to thank you for your continuing efforts to raise funds to support child safety and protection.
2023 has already been a year to remember. Following the State Election in March, I conducted the swearing-in of the new Premier and his Ministry at Government House. Then in late April and early May, it was my honour to present medals to 307 recipients of Australian Honours and awards across 10 Investiture Ceremonies. Soon after came the Coronation of their Majesties the King and Queen, in London, on 6 May. It was a great honour to represent New South Wales at that Service and at associated events. Being present at Westminster Abbey, where Coronations have taken place for over 1,000 years, and bearing witness to the first Coronation Service there in 70 years, was truly an extraordinary and historic experience.
On the return from London, I conducted a Vice-Regal mission to the United Arab Emirates, NSW largest trading partner in the Middle East, to strengthen our relationships and support the work of Investment NSW in promoting our State. A week later Dennis and I undertook similar missions in the key markets of Vietnam and Indonesia.
In Vietnam, one heart-tugging visit was to the Hung Vuong Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The level of healthcare in the hospital was excellent with highly committed staff, who, in the neonatal ward tend to premature babies, some as tiny as 600 grams. Discussions around women’s health, including mobile breast screening and breast care nurses were productive and has involved a preliminary follow up by our NSW Senior Trade Commissioner, given Australia’s excellent work in these areas.
These activities occurred along with the regular constitutional, ceremonial and community duties that are part of the Governor’s role.
With such a busy first half of the year I was unable to attend your Race Day which I hear was a great success. I wish you well as you prepare for the Spring Luncheon and Christmas function in the coming months. I also congratulate you on your 60th anniversary this year. What a difference you have made in the lives of children and families over those 6 decades!
