On 2nd March the Safe Children Conference was held at the International Conference Centre, Darling Harbour. The conference was convened by Mr Jeff Taylor, CEO of the Child Abuse Prevention Service (CAPS) and the Cornucopia Committee was invited to attend. The President and Vice President attended.
The theme of the Conference was “Make the Future Safer for our Children” which explored the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Response to child sexual abuse, their impacts and implications.
The conference was chaired by Dr Kieran Le Plastrier, member of the Board of CAPS and Clinical Director, Jewish House. We heard some amazing speakers from a wide range or organisations who provided a broad overview of child abuse in all its forms.
Speakers included Mr Robert Fitzgerald, former Commissioner of the Royal Commission into Child Abuse who presented the Commission’s recommendations; the Hon Dan Tehan MP Minister for Social Services; Steve Kinmond Community and Disability Services – Commissioner and Deputy Ombudsman as well as representatives from the police and the legal profession. A most impressive presentation was made by Special Guest Mr Damien Rider, a child abuse survivor who has championed the cause through many great deeds over a number of years.
Cornucopia Committee Inc was recognised with their logo on the overhead screens throughout the day, as well as acknowledged in their Program. It was evident from those we spoke to during the Conference that our work rates very highly with many organisations, particularly those organisations who benefit from our fundraising. This was an informative and very gratifying experience.
